There is constant motion in the ocean in the form of a global ocean conveyor belt due to thermohaline currents. These currents are density driven, which are affected by both temperature and salinity. Cold, salty water is dense and sinks to the bottom of the ocean while warm water is less dense and rises to the surface.
The conveyor belts with the highest specific breaking and splice strength are the St 7800 steel cord conveyor belts, operating on two long distance downhill conveyors at the Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. An even stronger belt, ST 10000, is going to be installed at Codelco39s Chuquicamata underground system.
Read MoreDiagrams of the Global Conveyor Belt GCB are two dimensional and therefore simplified and do not, for example, include all of the intermediate water masses or surface water currents. However, the key of the Global Conveyor Belt concept is that it explains the general systems of heat transport as well as bottom water aging and nutrient supply in the oceans.

Read MoreThe global ocean conveyor belt is a constantly moving system of deepocean circulation driven by temperature and salinity. The great ocean conveyor moves water around the globe. Cold, salty water is dense and sinks to the bottom of the ocean while warm water is less dense and remains on the surface.
Read MoreThe ocean circulation conveyor belt helps balance climate. As part of the ocean conveyor belt, warm water from the tropical Atlantic moves poleward near the surface where it gives up some of its heat to the atmosphere. This process partially moderates the cold temperatures at higher latitudes.

Read MoreThe circulatory path of the great ocean conveyor includes surface water being blown away from the Equator and towards the poles. An example of this is the Gulf Stream. As it moves towards the poles, the circulating water of the great ocean conveyor loses heat and begins to sink. It then flows into the ocean basins.
